Rain, Rain (Snow, Snow)...

...go away? So I've had this thought on rainy/snowy days in the past but as I peer out my Life Center alcove I was reminded of this thought...let me share.

So what constitutes a "nice day?" If it's sunny out and not too hot or not too cold, we say with joy and ease, "It's so beautiful out!" or "What a nice day today!" On the contrary, on a day such as today, we are likely to grumble and complain incessantly. Perhaps you have said the following, either out of habit or perhaps with great candor, "What a cruddy/dreary day!" or "The weather sure has been bad lately" or something to that effect. So what truly constitutes a "nice" or "bad" day? Does the weather really influence people's emotions that much? Now don't go telling me what modern psychologists are saying about seasonal affective disorder and stuff like that. Could it be something akin to a self-fulfilling prophecy (i.e. we are so convinced that the weather causes us to be in such a mood that it ends up actually doing so)? You mean to tell me that your faith and love for Jesus is not strong enough to help you overcome so great an obstacle as the weather? *Gasp!* *Sarcasm*

Psychology aside, here's my perception: our own selfishness influences us to such an extent that a "good" or "bad" day is contingent upon whether the climate allows us to indulge our selfish plans for the day or not. Come on peeps! Cheer up! Go puddle jumping with your kids (watch out for glass!) or go play tackle football in the snow,  or stay in and read a book...or how 'bout this, spend some time with the Holy Spirit! Rather than have a mopey attitude and be a lump on the couch watching Oprah, read about the great love and compassion of our Great and Living God! Just a thought...
